LupoGait is the first scientifically validated mobile gait analysis system for dogs. Each study is presented here with its research question, result and relevance for practice.
Why scientifically sound gait analysis is essential for LupoGait
Scientifically sound gait analysis is central to orthopaedic and neurological diagnostics. Many conditions such as hip dysplasia (HD), elbow dysplasia (ED) or degenerative joint disease develop gradually and often go unnoticed in the early stages. LupoGait enables a precise and objective assessment of canine mobility through scientifically validated measurements. Our technology steps in where visual assessment reaches its limits and provides quantifiable data to detect lameness, incorrect loading and gait asymmetries early.
Our goal is to take diagnostics and therapy in veterinary medicine to a new level, with scientifically tested sensor technology, practice-oriented research and international cooperation.

Serial kinematic analysis using inertial measurement units in growing dogs at risk of hip dysplasia
Blättler P. et al. · Veterinary and Animal Science 25, 100385 · September 2024 · peer-reviewed
- Study: LupoMove Puppy, the puppy study. Measurements from 2019.
- Research question: Does the gait of puppies that develop hip dysplasia already differ from that of healthy puppies during growth?
- Method: 54 puppies (Australian Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler) measured serially from week 12 to month 15 of life, 44 analysed. HD assessment by the Dysplasia Commission in Zurich.
- Result: 13 features differed significantly between healthy dogs and dogs with HD, six of them highly significantly on the affected limb. Dogs with HD showed a less steady gait during growth.
- For practice: Basis for the LupoGait Puppy add-on with a hip score for the left and right sides.

Extraction of canine gait characteristics using a mobile gait analysis system based on inertial measurement units
Altermatt M. et al. · Veterinary and Animal Science 21, 100301 · September 2023 · peer-reviewed
- Research question: How accurate and reproducible are IMU measurements for canine gait analysis?
- Result: High agreement with clinical assessments and more precise detection of small gait deviations than with visual methods.
- For practice: Validation of the LupoGait system as an objective measuring instrument.
